British government has placed 11 further nations to its public alert register concerning the dangers of toxic alcohol contamination from contaminated spirits.

The updated warning covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the incidence of confirmed occurrences" of industrial alcohol toxicity.

Only a few weeks ago, the government had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, in response to a number of notable events like the deadly demise of six travelers in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being warned that as little as minimal doses of toxic alcohol can cause blindness or death within 12–48 hrs.

What is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Utilized?

Methanol is a toxic chemical typically used in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint thinner. This chemical is not meant for ingestion.

Although it is generated during the production of spirits, reputable manufacturers reduce it to low, safe levels for human consumption through the distillation process.

However in some countries, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to reduce expenses, and because it is flavorless and scentless, it is extremely challenging to notice.

Official Advice for Travelers

Authorities official Hamish Falconer said that every traveler should recognize the symptoms of toxic alcohol toxicity.

"When you are consuming alcohol overseas, opt for well-known venues and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," the official said.

"If something feels off, for example a fatigue that's far more intense than usual or vision problems – get medical help right away."

The entire list of nations listed as posing a risk of toxic alcohol toxicity currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
