Previous FBI head James the ex-FBI chief has pleaded not guilty to making false statements to congressional representatives and hindering a legislative process.

His legal representative submitted the answer acting as his counsel in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.

Patrick Fitzgerald announced he would seek to have the legal matter dismissed for several factors including that his client, a opponent of Donald Trump, was being singled out.

James Comey was charged soon after Donald Trump pushed his chief prosecutor to move forward against him.

Legal Proceedings

In court on mid-week, the defense counsel the legal representative informed the court they intended to present several motions to throw out the legal matter before a trial, claiming the government's case was retaliatory and that a US attorney was wrongfully designated to assume control of the case.

James Comey's case was originally handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who left his position under pressure from Donald Trump after his investigation into another opponent - the New York official - did not succeed to file indictments.

Courtroom Atmosphere

James Comey appeared in optimistic frame of mind as he came into the courtroom on Wednesday, conversing with his attorneys and making jokes. He was joined by his spouse, Mrs Failor and child his daughter, a US lawyer who the Trump administration terminated.

Upon hearing to the court state his rights and the two counts against him in court on Wednesday, the defendant was inquired if he grasped the accusations.

Background Context

Mr Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013-2017 and was terminated about a few months into Donald Trump's first term as national leader. At the period, the director was overseeing an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between the Russian government and the presidential campaign.

During his tenure, Mr Comey triggered a counter-response from Democrats when he stated just days before the national vote that he was examining Democratic candidate Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Legal actions against the candidate were not filed, causing disapproval from conservative politicians as well.

Ongoing Accusations

The federal government allege the former director provided false information to the legislature during a congressional hearing in September 2020 when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They allege he misled the legislative body by stating he had not permitted a person at the FBI to leak to media organizations details about the agency probes.

Prosecutors also charge the defendant of "wrongfully trying to affect, block and impede" the committee by providing untrue information to it.

Public Statements

Via social media the former director published to his online platform after he was accused, he stated he was wrongly accused and alleged the former president of behaving like a "tyrant".

"Our household have known for considerable time that there are costs to challenging Mr Trump," he said. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."

"I'm innocent," he stated further. "Therefore proceed with a court case."

The charges against the former director emerged after the former president posted on online platforms insisting on his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, charge James Comey and additional individuals.
