Major Internet Disruption Impacts Dozens Websites and Mobile Apps

A large-scale online failure has impacted numerous online platforms and applications around the world, with users reporting troubles accessing the internet after problems at the web hosting system.

The disrupted platforms include the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, in addition to several Amazon-owned operations like its main retail platform and the Ring security doorbell company.

In the UK, the financial institution Lloyds was disrupted along with its affiliates the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, and further notifications of problems accessing the HMRC site on the start of the week. Furthermore across the UK, multiple Ring users turned to social media to complain their doorbells were not working.

Solely in the United Kingdom, accounts of issues on specific platforms ran into the many thousands for each app.

Amazon reported that the problem originated in the Atlantic coast of the United States at Amazon Web Services, a division that provides essential web framework for many businesses, who lease resources on the company's servers. Amazon Web Services is the most extensive cloud computing service.

Just after the start of the day (PDT) in the US (8am BST), the company announced “elevated failure rates and slowdowns” for the cloud services in a region on the eastern US of the America. The ripple effect was seen to disrupt platforms around the world, with the problem monitoring service showing outages with the identical platforms in various regions.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a platform that tracks internet outages, also reported a surge in problems on the start of the week, including several cases found in the state of Virginia, the region of the eastern US data center where AWS said the problems started.
