Marnus Labuschagne Left Out from Australia's ODI Squad to Face Team India

Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the three-match ODI series versus India, with high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw getting a unexpected call-up.

Performance Issues Lead to Omission

Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the ODI squad after managing only a single run in his two batting efforts during the top-end series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a best innings of forty-seven in his most recent ten ODI batting appearances.

Labuschagne has featured in 68 one-day internationals and accumulated 1,871 runs at an average of 34.64, but will now continue to press his claims a Test team comeback ahead of the Ashes beginning in Perth on 21 November.

Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Changes

Labuschagne has shown signs of a return to form with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw scored a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

Renshaw is in line to make his first white-ball appearance in the forthcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.

Renshaw has played 14 Test matches with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a Test return as Australia search for a solution to their opening batting issues.

Bowling Returns and Fitness News

Fast bowler Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after having time off since performing well for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.

Big Bash star Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the lead up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.

Skipper Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he works to regain fitness from a back injury in time to captain Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Squad Selection Strategy and Schedule

Australia have selected a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-match series due to a wrist injury suffered in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 sides after smashing a century in the final game against New Zealand to seal a two-nil victory last week.

“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be player management through the back end of the series as players get ready for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an crucial phase in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test matches ahead.”

Australia’s three-game ODI series against India commences on October 19 in Perth, before the rivals play five T20 internationals from October 29.
