Minecraft's Mayhem Mounts Drop Brings Forth a Stunningly Wild Fresh Weapon to the Game

The winter content update for Minecraft has landed — and it brings with it the initial fresh armament added to the game since the heavy club made its debut. The lance is finally here and it could very well alter your gameplay in Minecraft, especially if you thrive on pandemonium.

An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides

The Mounts of Mayhem update also introduces several new features and updates related to animal mounts in the game. That driving concept made the spear the ideal addition for this release, as the creators had already known it was the moment to introduce a new weapon.

"We knew initially that we wanted a new weapon that would provide extended reach, and we envisioned it for fighting from atop a creature," explained a senior product manager. "We experimented with a few different ideas, but the spear was the one that both felt great when we ran our trials and also was visually fitting for the use case."

If you're wondering whether mounted combat means you can charge at your allies on horseback, the answer is a resounding yes. In fact, there's even an attack perfectly suited for it.

"[Jousting on horses is one of the biggest functions for the spear, and it's so much fun," the lead adds. "The spear has a pair of offensive moves: You have the quick stab, where you pierce your enemy. But you also have a charge attack where you lower your spear and get more damage [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] ideal for mounted duels."

Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration

The unruly pleasure doesn't have to stop there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've visited The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] ideal for equipping the wings and flying forth and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she teases.

In other words: Aerial lance combat is now possible, and it needs to become an Olympic sport right away.

Another significant inclusion in this fresh content is the Nautilus. This aquatic being, which is based on the seashells we've all been collecting for years, can be domesticated and mounted for deep-sea journeys. Not only will it move you through the water quicker than swimming, it'll also maintain your air supply, so there's no requirement to come up for air for a breath.

The other inclusions are mostly things that are out to get you, as is the nature of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a zombie Nautilus popping up in the water, sometimes with a Drowned on its back. If you are able to dispatch the Drowned, though, you can befriend the zombie Nautilus — or the regular one, for that matter — with a blowfish.

"We've been thinking about this challenge on and off, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the perfect moment to also unveil something for aquatic environments," the lead elaborates. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a number of concepts for aquatic rides that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked impressive, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was found within the game."

She also notes that there are actually a pair of variants of zombie Nautilus: standard and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] provide diversity to what you encounter underwater."

Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements

Additional features include the sun-proof skeletons, desert-exclusive undead archers that can endure the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you end up in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another new mob. Camel husks have an notable look that sees their skeletal frame exposed. The applies equally to undead steeds, who have a similar exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a spear-carrying zombie on their back.

The remaining updates on the drop's list are smaller gameplay updates, including some highly requested tweaks to riding horses. Now, you can cross rivers and lakes while atop a horse. Additionally, high-tier barding is now available at the crafting table, so you can give your horse the top-tier safeguarding it is worthy of.

A Spicy Send-Off for the Year

Overall, the last content update of the year is a pretty good one. The spear by itself — and the pandemonium it invites — would have seemed like a major improvement. Throw in the Nautilus, and additional creatures seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a little more dangerous.

The Mayhem Mounts update is live for all major editions of Minecraft.
