The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The anticipation around the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team might be building a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, branching plots, and flexible progression—elements that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can anticipate another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
