UN Ends Sanctions on Syrian President Before Presidential Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

United Nations Security Council members approved to an American proposal to lift sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his presidential meeting the following week.

He became provisional head of state subsequent to commanding a rebel offensive that drove out the previous leader in the final month of 2024, bringing to a close thirteen long years of internal conflict.

America's diplomat Mike Waltz at the United Nations said the UN had sent "a strong political signal" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a different period" since Assad was deposed.

Previously, he faced UN sanctions as the leader of the Islamist group HTS, which was formerly linked to al-Qaeda. America delisted HTS from a list of international terrorist organizations in July.

More Penalties Removed

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister the interior minister.

The Syrian diplomatic chief applauded the lifting of the penalties, posting on social media: "Syria expresses its appreciation to Washington and to friendly nations for assisting the Syrian nation and citizens."

Upcoming White House Meeting

The Syrian leader's Washington trip this coming Monday follows US President Donald Trump said the Syrian leader had made "good progress" working toward stability to the previously divided state.

Placeholder Trump and Sharaa meeting
After the meeting, Trump said Sharaa had "a legitimate chance to unify the country".

Both presidents held discussions initially in May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia during a visit to the region.

Following that encounter, the US president described the Syrian as a "strong individual" with a "very strong past".

His Islamist group HTS served as al-Qaeda's branch in Syria until he severed ties during 2016.

Previous US Visit

Monday's visit is not the president's debut journey to the United States during this period. During September, he became the first Syrian leader to speak before the global assembly in Manhattan after approximately sixty years.

In his speech, he declared the nation was "restoring its proper position within the global community" while showing support with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
